What could the BBC or Government do then?

Or, say 1 Million people stop paying? Impossible to take that many to court and so others might follow.

I asked this very same question a year ago :p

Personally I agree that we shouldn't pay. In this day and age being Taxed to own a television beggars belief!

Arguments that the standard of programming would fall are pointless programs are poor as it is, let the BBC draw their money from advertising like the other channels and Joe public can have some extra cash in their pockets for the rest of the taxes we are getting hit with.

HAIL THE REVOLUTION!!!

It's just a fine, and the Inland Revenue can easily fine that many people.

It is a waste of money though, especially if you don't watch TV. Anyway, there's many loopholes past the TV licence. You could say that the TV is only used as a monitor for a games console or something, which means you don't have to pay the licence fee. This is especially handy given the PS3 will have TV capability very soon - or you could just hide the aerial.

The only problem is then that we'd all probably be fined by the government or the BBC would stop broadcasting, leaving us with the mostly, less-than-good programmes on ITV, Channel 4, Five.
Besides why would you want to? Having a commercial-free broadcaster is very rare these days.

couldnt agree with you more.....bloody legalised blackmail. i dont watch the BBC at all, and i cancelled my licence DD a couple of months ago. no doubt i will get trouble. but then if i do, I'll have my telly re tuned to an American station or some thing. i know that is legal.....SO thats what I'll do. most TV is rubbish or repeats nowadays any way.

I think that people in the Uk are quite lucky.

In Ireland we have to pay a TV licence of approx 100 pounds plus we STILL have to sit through advertisments!

I would rather your system than ours!

You would, ultimately, lose the BBC. High quality drama (eg The Street), documentaries, Panorama, Newsnight, all the stuff Attenborough does, good comedy like Lead Balloon, topical news quizzes like News for You, the actual news, the sport, all the radio to cater for every taste: the list of what the BBC does, and does well, is endless.

ALL without adverts, because of the licence fee. It is such a small price to pay to enable us to retain what is undoubtedly the jewel in the world's broadcasting crown.

Or do you prefer to allow Murdoch to dominate what you watch, endlessly interrupted by mind-numbing adverts (which I NEVER, EVER, watch).

advantages of having/watching tv and paying a tv license

1 - it's reasonably cheap for what u get - turn it on anytime of the day and there's always something to watch
2 - it helps to keep a troubled mind at bay. you can sit and mong out in front of a tv for hours - escapism!
3 - it great for kids - if you don't like spending time with your kids a tv will help rid you of their annoyances as instead of annoying u they are watching tv!
4 - control - a tv is a great way to manipulate the viewer - messages through the medium of tv e.g. news, documentaries etc helps to maintain the illusion that society/establishment are never wrong and what you are being told/shown is the truth when in fact it could be a lie
5 - paying a tv license keeps lots of people in jobs!!
6 - a tv helps to keep loneliness at bay. lots of people are lonely young and old and a tv provides comfort in these harsh times
7 - helps with conversation skills. people who watch tv can keep up with other people and give them something to talk about. although talking about what goes on on tv is frivolous and utterly wasteful it seems people do not want to talk about other more important issues like how their own life is going
8 - a tv fills an empty space in the living room

have i missed any out??

i don't have a tv and haven't had one for about 12 years now so i don't pay a tv license i'd much rather put up with the shyte in my life and do other things to pass time. i'm my own person and not many people talk to me cos they know i can't talk about the x factor or eastbenders etc

Do you really want to watch adverts on every channel. I don't. So no I won't be joining you. Most of the things I watch are on BBC.
