I think people who join the army have a certain desire to protect the country and be great humans that can not be had by all people, and personally I respect them for doing something that I myself would not be able too.

Theres always many reasons why a person would not join the army, and it isnt always danger and death either. Being in the army is a whole new different lifestyle. Many army service men and women are honored for their bravery and patriotism, especially by the media, yet that does not necessarily make it a great and wonderful job.
As a former infanteer, I know what the conditions were like on the inside. Its not the same as you see it in the movies. You are always told what to do, you serve politics and there are always the chance that you end up fighting on the wrong side, its hard on the body, and for my particular profession, if you don't have the heart to kill another person under orders, then it is not for you. Theres a fine line in ethics in the military, and when it all comes down to it, the politicians determine the ethics for you.
While death and danger is indeed a common fear, there are more to the army than such things.

It has nothing to do with "The fear of death". The fact is when you join the military, you live by their rules. You lose your total freedom to think, act and live. You do it by their methods or there is punishment to be had. Unlike in the movies, real War is "Hell". People die violently. It is a total nightmare that never ends. It stays with you the rest of your life. The stress level is the highest you will ever experience, some people can't handle it. They crack under the pressure. When you get out, the government does not take care of you the way it should. Many of our past Veterans are "homeless" today. It is a disgrace for this country. You have to like to wear uniforms too. Need I say more. I say bring back the real "Draft" for both men and women age 18 to 30 and then you will have a standing army of good people. Everyone must go regardless of how much money their daddy has or who they know. Give the military Veterans what they need in hospital care and benefits too. Good Luck.

Well, you know, they have guns and can command their men to do horrible and illegal things and some have, even in this country.
I respect no group just because of their title. I respect individuals if they have earned it and I don't know any Army people, officers or enlisted, well enough to judge that.
Silly question. I don't think anyone makes a decision to join the army or not based upon their officer corps, but upon other factors: lack of opportunity in civilian life, desire for adventure or camaraderie, security, who knows? I also think that most people do not believe they are going to die.
Note: I forgot the main reason that people enlist in the Army; the Navy and the Marines refused them. Air Force would probably be third choice, but if one is turned down by all services one can be pretty sure the Army will still take one.

I have little, in fact no respect for army officers. They are sumpremacist, violent poeple who risk others' lives (and their own) for a "greater good". Surely no one is so shallow as to think that 100 deaths are worse than 10. I would rather be under Nazi rule than in the army, and if any of my children were to join the army, I would feel I had failed as a father.

I joined the Army years ago just before Desert Storm...
I didn't join to overcome my fear of death. I joined because I love my Country, and I am willing to fight to protect it.
That's why people like me join. Some join to get benefits like college money or to get to travel the world.
It's an experience I have yet to find an equal to, I am very proud of my service and I would do it again if I had the ability.
I don't recommend to anyone to join right now, because we are mired down in a War that has no resolve to be over. There has been war in the Middle East since the beginning of time and I don't want to see anyone get shot up or blown up or tortured for a people who put no value on individual human life.
We all want to pass away having meant something to someone and even though the efforts in the Middle East seem vain and bloody to me, I wouldn't turn away any of my brothers in arms for my country.
The military actually trains you how to not get hurt or killed, you just have to listen instead of talk and keep your head down and your eyes open.
It takes a special kind of person. Some aren't cut out for it, that's ok. That's why the rest of us go in your place, we don't want you to have to face what we are willing to face in order to prove your patriotism. Just love your country and be a good example to children.
Good luck
Star for you.

It's similar to a view of professional athletes. People respect "some" professional athletes because they don't have the physical make-up or composition to acheive the same level. People respect professional warriors because they don't have the emotional or psychological make-up to deal with that job.
As for expecting death but not trying to post-pone it, as it were, people generally see life as a party, literally. When you're at a party, you know you're going to leave, but you stay as long as you can because you think that the party is more fun than sleeping. Sleeping, in this case, is obviously death.
You're personal philosophy concerning death may affect how you approach life, but there's generally a perception that life is better than death.

People who join army have their own reasons. It is not necessary that everybody who joins the army thinks of patriotism. Army is a profession like any other profession and as we chose any other profession depending on our inclination, family circumstances and surroundings and motivations,so people chose army profession.
Phrases like supreme sacrifice and patriotism are invented to encourage the soldiers to fight. They must have a purpose and thus they are given the purpose. Purpose to kill to protect your own country and the people.
This is all political game. Why cant we live in peace and not to talk of dieing for our nations.

I think its everyone's responsibility to be brave and face our individual enemies as the passengers on the 9/11 air craft did. We shouldn't put all the responsibility on our young, naive and restless men and expect them to catch the bullets for us. I don't think young people should join the military. The job of bullet catcher should be abolished as there are more useful government jobs for people to do that will be more beneficial in the restoration of peace.

I tried to join the service, but cant due to a car accident. We are scared of having loved ones get hurt, but respect those who serve. You basically have it about right. And not everyone fears death just so ya know.
