I work in a gift type shop and we have some fancy tea light holders that are glass - the red ones are nearly £30 each but the other colours, blue, green and sand are only £10. Why is red glass so much more expensive to make??

The metal that produces some of the red colour in the glass is gold. This can be the major contributor to the expense.
All of the different colours found in glass are produced by introducing a metallic oxide into the molten glass. Cobalt as an oxide produces a deep royal blue. One of the oxides of iron produces green. An oxide of copper forms a blue colour in glass and so on. If you are interested search the sites on the web dealing with glass blowing or look in wikipedia - it usually has information like this.

Most of the other colors can be made from recycled glass that may have green or brown scrap in them (those two colors being the most common). Red needs to be made from clear or red scrap so it is more expensive to make - which riases its price.

I'm not that sure but i think it has something to do with the amount of dye they have to put in the glass. Either they have to put alot more dye than usual or that the red dye is more expensive to buy than the others. I hope this helps. Thanks. =]

The pigment is more difficult to obtain and so is more expensive, simple as that.
