It doesn't cause it to leak out.
But it can cause air to get trapped in the lines. When you lay it on your side & move it, you should leave it sit in it's final place, upright, for some period of time (usually 24 hours).
If you try to run the refrigerator too soon, the trapped air will keep the coolant (and oil, as fwatkins said) from getting to the compressor, which will burn up the compressor.
Hope this helps!

The freon will not go out but the oil in the compressor will plug up the freon lines. If you have to lay it over,be sure to lay it on the side where there are no lines coming out of the compressor. You will still need to let the oil equalize back into the compressor for 2 or 3 hours before plugging in the refrigerator. If the line fills up with compressor oil, then the freon cannot flow throughout the system. The box will never get cool. If the lines are full of oil the reed valves could be ruined if the pressure exceeds the normal flow rate.

No. However it has another problem in that the condensed refrigerant (with its lubricating oil) can run out of the compressor into other parts of the piping. It does not leave the refrigerator. However it is not where the refrigerator need it to be.
The solution is simple. After it is stood up, give it 24 hours for the fluids to return to their proper locations. Then plug it in and all will be well.

No, but it is not a good idea to put it on it's side, because the oil in the compressor can leak causing the refrigerator to stop functioning.

It could, because it could damage the coil and compressor connections, causing a leak.
