I think you should know by now what the difference is between manga and anime from everyone else's responses. However, since they neglected to answer your other question, I'll take that one up for you.

Yes, the American/English version of a Manga and Anime are often different that their original Japanese counterpart. The changes happen in varying degrees though.

-Sometimes there are just cultural changes to make it more accessible to English audiences. An example would be in Pokemon when a riceball is redrawn into a andwich.

-Sometimes violence gets cenored. Blood is removed or recolored, weapons are replaced, or scenes won't even be shown. An example of this would be One Piece (or most 4Kids shows) with guns being replaced with hammers and the like. Or even Yu-Gi-Oh where guns just got removed completely, and the baddies just point menaceingly at people.

-Sometimes "ecchi" (sex appeal) content gets censored a little bit. You can see this in series like Sailor Moon where it is edited so less skin/cleaveage is revealed.

-Sometimes shows get redone because of someother "unwholesome" content. In small cases, things like cigarettes get editted out or changed into lolipops. In more extreme cases, whole plots get rewritten, or certain episodes won't get aired An exaples would be Card Captor Sakura where the whole gay theme pretty much get's erased from the plot, and a whole episode doesn't get aired because one character got drunk early on in that episode.

All in all, you see editing mainly because the Japanese have a different set values for what acceptable for younger kids. If you watch series that are targeted towards older audiences on Sci-Fi and Adult Swim, or just purchase the DVDs, you start to see less and less changes in the series

Manga are the graphic novels while anime are the animation shows

Manga is basically the Japanese comic book while anime is the Japanese cartoon

If a manga gets popular enough it gets turned into anime

Here is where you can read Sailor Moon online for free! :)
http://anip.homeunix.com/onlinereading/Sailormoon%20complete/Sailor_Moon_v01-v04-1_CLASSIC/SM%2001-1%20(Act%201)%20MIXX/index.php?image=SM_Mixx_1-1_00.jpg&server=nas.html

IMPORTANT NOTE!!!!: If a manga is formated the Japanese way you would read the columns from the right side of the page to the left side. However! I have looked at the first couple pages of the Sailor Moon manga on this website and it is read left to right! The way we would normally read!

Sometimes a series' manga & anime will have different plots

Anime is short for Animation in Japan. It is a way of drawing. It has become very popular in America.

Manga is a type of book. The front cover is the back cover, the first page is on the last, and you have to read backwards. It is entirely made up of Anime drawing. It, along with Anime has become popular in America.

My favorite manga book is the Yotsuba& series. It is about a little girl who is from a different country and has been adopted. She and her father have just moved to America, and Yotsuba has to get used to all the new American things, such as TV, Swings, and Rain. It is a very cute book. There are 3 books in the series, and the first one is my favorite.

Manga is basically a japanese comic( in my opinion i would never read an american comic) the pages go from right to left but when translated into english the words obviously go from left to right(not pages!)
Anime is japanese animation. A cartoon. They have a wide variety of catagories so its pretty easy to generalize what catagory you like
Most Manga is made into an anime and some animas turn into manga. Anime can also be from novels, games, and from historical content.

Manga is like a comic book. If you read Manga, most of the time you have to read it from right to left on each page. This is because most are japanese and their pages are formatted differently than in English (left to right)pictures and bubbles.

Anime is actually animated like you can watch it on tv. cartoons.
