The Maelstrom is a strong current on the west coast of Norway, the country where I live. The current is the result of the Gulfstream running between mainland and an outer lying island. The Gulfstream is, of course, the main north Atlantic current running from the Gulf of Mexico to norther Europe, following the Norwegian coast and going under the polar ice.
The Maelstrom was made popular by the author Edgar Allan Poe, a century ago, but its power was quite over exaggerated.
