Right after I stepped out on terminal leave from the army, I went to work for Home Depot. I lasted a week. Nothing against the place, the manager and the fellow co-workers were all nice enough and most of them seem knowledgeable in their respective areas but it seemed like I spent more time in other areas than mine just to find the people that were responsible for that area back in the break room. Also, it was just to much of a change to fast going from being an infantry first sergeant back from deployment to an inside/ouside garden guy and realizing that I actually couldn't possibly care less about the horsepower of some garden tractor or someone's lawn infestation. If you didn't get accurate info on any questions about some lawn problem, it may have been me that you were talking to. Sorry about that.

I've had both good and badexperiences at both HD & Lowes. But in general, I've had fewer 'issues' when dealing with Lowes' customer service.
The other side of it is: If I ask an associate a quesiton, I get more honest answers from the Lowes' employees (when I can find them) than HD.
Example: HD, multiple times I've asked questions where the salesperson, from their answer, doesn't know what they are talking about. This seems to be most evident in the flooring section. Their electrical staff and plumbing staff seem to do OK.
The local Lowes, on the other hand, doesn't have as many salespeople on the floor, so it's harder to find them. When I have been able to get someone & ask a question, they appear to be more willing to say they don't know/can't answer.
In closing, I realize this will vary from area to area. But given a choice of where to go, I'll take Lowes over HD because I've had better experience in dealing with the before and after the sales have been completed.
YMMV. Good luck!

There is 2 different ways to answer this question. One. If you want someone to HELP you, it's a toss up. Lowes has very friendly reassuring employees who are eager to help, and you always seem to be able to FIND someone whos willing to help. The problem is, Iv'e found they don't have much knowledge! And if they think they know what they are talking about, chances are, the information is wrong or out dated! Two. If you go to Home Depot, there employees usually give great advise, and even helpful hints you might not have known. The problem is...You can't EVER find an employee that is in the right section, (the section that they specialize in), or, you can't evne find ANYONE. or, if you do hunt someone down, their in too big of a hurry to help you, or already helping someone else, (who is completely monopolizing them). So really, If you want someone friendly to talk to and to point you to the right isle, go to Lowes. If you want to be ignored, go to Home Depot. Bottom line is this, I likie Home Depot for the products they carry. Thats aboutr it. They are very slow, rude, and getting through the crowds and lines at registers, (and parking lot), are hell! I like Lowes because the service is good, and friendly. n They do try and help as much as they are capable. There are hardly any lines. You never fight big crowds or big carts. You don't have to cut your own expensive trim boards, (H. Depot sells by the foot, Lowes sells by the piece, 8, 10, 12 feet, etc. which tends to be alot cheaper)! The people don't treat you like a complete idiot if you don't know that eggshell is usually referred to as a sheen in paint, not a color. And you can always find a place to park! Every time! I say LOWES WINS! Hands down. Less stress.

it depends on the customer, as well as the employee. i work at home depot, and truly want to make people happy, and will gladly help them either find what they are looking for, or will get them some one else, who can help better. but, it is a little discerning when customers don't give me the respect i deserve. insulting my intelligence doesn't really motivate me to want to help someone.
there have been several times when i have had to politely tell a customer...'sorry, no'--and instead of taking me up on any compromise i offer, i get insults hurled at me, as if i was a soccer net. i don't deserve that.
yes, it is true, it is my job to make a customer happy. and i am okay with that. all i am asking for is to get the same respect from a customer, that i give.
i think this apply's to home depot, as well as lowes. i have shopped at lowes, as well, and i really don't see any difference in the level of service between either store.
thank you

I purchased a washer and dryer at Lowe's and was very pleased with the salesman, the product, and the service, and the price, but I enjoy going to Home Depot too.

Without reading any answers, but with all due respect to them, and you...I assume you realize that this POLL will generate different answers.
In large measure it has less to do with the store name, than it has to do with the Market; location; those hired; etc.
Example: I might work for either, and be paid minimum wage, but beyond what they BOTH dictate as Customer satisfaction, I might have a work ethic that dictates I respond to every customer, no matter as who's employee, with the same level of courtesy and help,as I might expect from them.
No offense, again, but it really is a very personal, narrowly directed question/answer, depending on individual experiences.

The only time I go into either one is when I know what I'm looking for. Neither of the stores, in my area, have competent help. If I have any questions I go to a "Mom & Pop"

Depends on where you are... I found that I like Home Depot better... but I'm biased, my sister worked there.

i have to think it depends on location. in truth i have found that in the last few months the service has improved at both depot locations and the lowes that i frequent.

Shop at local independent mom and pop stores. You will get the best service from them 9 times out of 10.
