What should I expect? I know all babies are different, but will she want to take a longer nap this afternoon, will she be out of sorts? she finnished all of her bottle after we gave her the rice. When I give it to her tomorrow, should I give her more or should I only up it week by week? Thanks in advance.

I realise it isn't "rocket science" but for a first time mother, or many others out there, it is not only an exciting but also worrying incase there is something that I am not doing right. So, to the person who wrote in with her "opinion" feels that what I am asking is commonsense, it may not be for people like me.

Hi Brunelsc, your question is not commonsense as someone said.
One mans meat is another man's poison.
First off, for a while just give her what you are already doing and increase it gradually.
You will soon know when she needs more as opposed to wanting more and there is a difference.
Yes, she probably may sleep a little more out of being content. But while she is sleeping she is not burning anything off is she.
That is why it's best to give little at first.
I have no doubt you will find these first months so exciting, the next thing will be the laying on the tummy and trying to crawl to mum, what a buzz that is. Keep doing what your doing merry christmas and happy new year to you and your family.

Hi there, yes she probably will sleep a bit longer especially through he night. I would just give her the same amount tomorrow and if she eats it all and it stays down and does not bring it back up i would increase it slightly the next day. Next week you could try and give her something different, like a savoury food, like mashed potato with butter and a little bit cheese, my daughter loved it, that was when she was 4months old, she is 11months old and i am a first time mum too. If you give her a savoury food first she wont develop a sweet tooth and only want to eat puddings all the time, if that was the case she would not be getting a lot of protein. My daughter loves potato and mince, chicken, scotch broth soup, pasta, most thing that i make for myself she will have now, in the morning we have porridge together. If you ever want any advice feel free to add me to your contacts list or email me and i will help if i can, good luck and have a merry xmas, this is our first being parent too and i cant wait. xxxxxxxx

she will probably sleep a little longer or want to sleep a little earlier than usual but other than that she should be fine, if she seems to be grumpy (not because shes tired) or seems a little under the weather it may be a bit too early to start her on solids (i dont know how old she is) keep the amount the same for 1-2weeks and if she seems to want more after its all gone then up the amount a bit but only do it if she wants more, dont do it day by day though give her about a week to get used to it then if she wants more she can have more.
i completely understand where you are coming from and you shouldnt feel silly for asking questions, how else would you know? im 32weeks pregnant at the moment with my first and already there are questions i have about simple things about the baby.
merry xmas x

I wouldn't expect anything different at all. When we started my daughter on solids I don't think anything changed apart from the worry that I was doing it right!
As far as amounts go, let your daughter guide you. She will only eat as much as she needs, you will know if she is still hungry because she will root for the spoon. It is extremely difficult to overfeed a baby. Just remember her stomach is very small and what may seem like a tiny amount to us would be a huge meal for them!
Don't worry too much and good luck!

The only thing that changed when I first started giving my boy rice cereal is that his poop got thicker in consistency for the first couple days until his digestive system improved. If he gets an upset tummy then wait a week before trying again.
The only other difference was I had a lot more laundry to do! Bibs, bibs and more bibs...... I'd drowning in a sea of dirty bibs!

Just start with a few teaspoons, gradually increase every week, or when you think she will eat more.. It's also a good idea to offer bottle before cereal since all her nutrition comes from the breastmilk/formula. Congratulations!

she will prob sleep a little more, make sure shes still hungry enough to have her milk if she starts liking the cereal more than back off a bit milk is more important. only give a small amount for the first couple wks until her stomach gets used to a new food.

It didnt faze my son in the least. Ive never known it to effect any child at all, in sleep fussiness or just in general.
Give her what she'll eat after a bottle, when she's full and doesnt want more, stop feeding her.
Its not rocket science, honestly. Just feed the baby.

first of all her stool will be different.
some children do take longer naps and some kids are fussy because there not use to it. but most get over it.

solids definetly make a baby fuller and they sleep for longer hours.
you could visit http://www.learning-graph.com/recipes.htm for tips on weaning and some excellent homemade baby cereal recipes.
