It's because the pieces don't give you gas as much as the whole ones do.

People like the look of whole cashews. Half pieces are looked at as damaged cashews. Besides you can make half cashews from whole, but not the other way around

I love cashews and have always gone for whole pieces. Recently I purchased a sale on the pieces only and I found I liked them better. I thought it was strange too. I figured out that possibly when I eat the pieces I savor the flavor better and I don't eat them as fast thus enjoying them longer. How will I go back to whole pieces now. I'm stumped!

You obviously meant "why do". Brand and the amount of salt that companies put on the nut effects the taste. I'm with you. Whole cashews unless you are putting them in a french green bean casserole.

If you buy the pieces from quality brands there is no difference.
The cheap brands tend to be filled with little scraps of cashews that are broken and then they over-drench them with salt. They may have to collect those scraps over a long period to start filling their production lines for packing them and those scraps may have gotten rancid in the meantime.

Cos the smaller pieces are coated with too much oil and salt taking away that yummy no oil or salt natural flavor hiding inside the whole ones. Now you made me want some!!!
