I was just watching the news and I saw a story that broke my heart. An older gentleman had let his dog out to go to the bathroom and he said kids around 15 years old had come up to his dog and put a 2 inch slash in him. The dog had to get 15 stitches. The man I don't believe got a good look at who the teens were. But it just made me think of how much someone in a case like this should serve jail time even if they are teens a few days would teach them a lesson. It's so sad that an animal who is helpless and not really able to defend itself could be harmed like that. Imagine what it is going through and how it can't even talk to tell you the pain it feels. I think punishment for harming animals should be comparable to if it was a person.

Yes! Just because they are "just animals" does not mean they can't feel scared, pain, or angry. If you can hurt something that's as helpless as a pet, than you are cold hearted enough to do it to anyone!

I believe they should serve some jail time for hurting or killing helpless animals. Maybe not as long as they would for hurting or killing a human but maybe a month or two in jail would make them realize that even though they are animals, there is no reason to hurt or kill them. It's sad to hear or abused dogs and different animals, and I wish I could take them all in and give them the life they deserve, but I can't because I don't have the money to take care of them.

Edit: I agree with Susan also, once they start hurting and killing animals, they will get so immune to it that they'll more than likely hurt and kill humans. It's a sad word that we live in

Yes. I was on a jury in a animal cruelty case. If we had found the man guilty he could have been given up to 5 yr. We found him not guilty in this case though because though he was negligent he did not intentionally inflict injury. But willful and intentional cruelty, yes jail time is justified.
Please note however I disagree with charging someone in a situation that happened many years ago in my neighborhood. A family of immigrants had bought a goat, killed and butchered it in the back yard for a wedding. They were charged with animal cruelty. They were not cruel they just did not understand that this was not "acceptable" in a residential area. They were some of the nicest people you ever met and had the most spoiled dog I have ever known.

I'm more than happy for them to serve HARSHER sentences than the same crime on a human being.

The more helpless, disabled or aged the person or animal, the worse the punishment should be.

I'm also all for subjecting the perpetrator to the same crime upon their own being.

To save all the trouble, just give me free reign without consequence, a shotgun and point me at the mongrels!

they DO serve jail time for animal abuse, even if you kick a stray dog you can be arrested for abuse. animals are protected under the law, haven't you ever seen animal cops on t.v. its a reality show on animal planet network, it follows the humane society animal rights enforcement officers ( animal cops) in different cities around the country going about thier day, they arrest tons of people for abuse and neglect. just be ready to shed a tear when you watch it.

Absolutely. Animal cruelty is wrong. And, just an fyi, hurting an animal can escalate into killing an animal and killing an animal is usually how serial killers get started. There are laws about neglect and killing innocent animals so now they need to revise it to include harming them as well.

I agree with you 100 % any one who would do this to a animal is a very sick person and i would be very afraid of them. They most definitely should do jail time.

Agree and I also think fines should be much higher and in certain instances people should never be allowed to own any animal again for the rest of their lives.
