I over heard a doctor saying that young people ( I think he meant 40 and younger) will immediately ask for pain meds, all the time. They seem to relish in their sickness and don't try to get up and go (within reason). He then said that older people (40 and up) don't really like to take pain meds, and are ready to go (within reason) they try harder.

So do you think that younger people just want a quick fix, and refuse to deal with pain and would rather have pain meds even though addiction is a high risk?

Or is that doctor full of bull?

Geekboy:
I work in a hospital and I am not a patient, so that doctor was saying what was really on his mind. People do watch the clock for their pain meds, and they complain to the doctor that they want more and more. Some patients are experts on pain meds.

To be honest, generally what your doctor may have said may be true today. I don't think doctors really have secret-meetings or seminars all over the world to come up with things like that. It's probably just a trend or pattern he noticed after years of practicing medicine.

I'm a pre-med student and have an internship at the local hospital. They talk about this all the time. Apperantly, no research has been conducted yet on the subject. However, doctors across the nation seem to notice particular patterns in patients, such as the one you overheard from your doctor. Hope I was a little helpful,

Bull, the majority of people on tons of meds are my parents age, late 70'-80's. I can't believe how many drugs they are on, I had a neighbor on 23 different meds! And this guy had a license to drive, he could hardly walk! Very scary. I think more people who are older rely on a pill to solve all their ailments overall. They also think doctors are Gods, that is a big part of the problem.

Overall, as consumers and patients, we better be wise and look after our own health by monitoring what goes into our bodies. Nurses checking in patients ask; "what drugs are you taking"? What they should be asking is; "do you take any"? Which implies something entirely different--not assuming you do.

This is a pretty hard one, because the ages should make no difference.

Older people may be less pain receptive because theyve had pain before.

It might be the how the times have passed?
