George Benson did an upbeat version of Summertime on an early album. Thats the only male version I know of.
Theres been great female versions of it, in particular Fantasia and Janis Joplin.

There are two versions of Summertime that I know of Sam Cooke was a soul singer from the 50's. He was and still is LEGENDARY. The other version is by American Idol winner Fantasia. Check out Sam Cooke greatest hits. my all time favorite song by him is A Change is Going To Come.

Listed but misspelled above: Paul Robeson, one of the greatest voices in the history of American music.

Robeson is more associated with the American musical theater and even opera (Porgy and Bess). He wasn't a jazz vocalist.

Fascinating man with a proud story beyond just singing.

SUMMERTIME By everyone and their brother. That song has been done so many times it's impossible to pin it down to one person.

I think Ray Charles also. But I do not think his rendition became a stand out.
