Harry Potter is a good one for any age. And, although I haven't myself read it, I heard that Eragon was good. I also have been getting a lot of recommendations for Dragon Lance lately. The Dark Tower is a seven volume Post Apacolyptic Sci-Fi Western Epic Fantasy series written by Stephen King. I also hear that his other fantasy works, The Eyes of the Dragon, Black House and The Talisman, where all really good. My sister has read The Sword of Truth and said that they were good, despite being too slow at times. I've also had recommendations for The Golden Compass and The Subtle Knife.

Anything by Mark Twain, especially Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer

Hardy Boys series -- I recommend the actual books over the graphic novels

My son loves the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan (based on mythology)

If you're into freaky vampire stuff, he also loves Derek Shan's Cirque du Freak series.

If you are really into action/adventure try any of the Clive Cussler books.
The movie "Sahara" was based on one of his books.
