Famine is overwhelmingly caused by political conflict, rather than simply a failure of crops. In many famine stricken countries, the aid sent rarely filters through to the actual problem areas and is instead intercepted at the ports/borders by corrupt/rebel soldiers. Also, a lot of the money donated to many of the bigger charities is absorbed in administration costs, before it even leaves the country. This does not mean the we in wealthier countries should not still contribute to charity, because even if only one more life is spared, or one more child is helped does this not make a worthwhile difference to the world? Who is to say what each person can achieve and is it not possible that a life saved could lead to that person changing their country. What would have become of South Africa, if Nelson Mandela had died as a child?

Many charities are run as businesses. They have full time paid employees. One could argue that if they didn't exist then numerous causes would not recieve any money at all but when you consider that for every £1.00 you put in a collection tin, usually less than 20% of it goes to help the 'recipient' then it sticks in the throat a little.

Just think about it.....if these charities, etc actually solved the problems they were collecting money for....many of these so-called "charity workers" would be out of a job. Do they actually want to solve the problem or cure a disease??? Maybe they are just trying to put a small handle on things so they can collect money forever.

Not much donated reaches those intended. Its a billion pound worldwide industry and the fat cats take their share, then corrupt officials in third world countries. Sorry to be so pessimistic but I would rather personally help someone or chip in to help complete a project than just hand over cash thinking its going to help.
