On what day does Winter Solstice occur? I have heard of this from my mother's family but never knew what day it actually came on.

Winter Solstice occurs on either Dec. 22 or Dec. 21, depending on the year. This year, it happens TODAY Dec. 22. Next year it will be on Dec. 21.

The winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere occurs on or about December 21st each year. This is the start of Winter in the Northern Hemisphere, and it is also the day with the shortest amount of time between sunrise and sunset. This occurs because of the combination of the tilt of the earth's access, and the orbit of the earth around the sun. After the Winter Solstice, days in the Northern Hemisphere start to become longer (i.e., longer time between sunrise and sunset), and continue to do so until the first day of summer (the summer solstice).

Winter solstice is the shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and marks the official beginning of winter. The sun is at its lowest in our sky because the North Pole of our tilted planet is pointing away from it.

it is on Dec. 22 2007
