So that car driver can read the "Ambulance" in the rear view mirror. If you are an ambulance driver you want the car drivers in front of you to get out of your way as quickly as possible. The ambulance flashes the siren, the auto driver looks in the rear view, and pulls off to the side of the road.

Its not Upside down. It is mirror image.
it is painted that way so that the vehicle driver in front of Ambulance can see it correctly as "AMBULANCE" in their Rare View Mirror and take immediate action to give Way to Ambulance.

Amulance is written upside down because the mirror of any other vehicle reads it straight then...mirror reads the things in inverse..by writing Ambulance upside down, it appears to be straight..

The main reason behind this is the property of rear-view mirror which shows the appearance of left into right and right into left (shortly known as 'lateral inversion') this in turn helps the driver in the front to appear the word 'ambulance' correctly in his rear view mirror and give the ambulance side.

I've never seen it written upside down, but have seen it spelled backwards. That is because if one is behind you, you can read it correctly in your rear view mirror.

If we are forward of Ambulance and we are seeing side mirror so we can see AMBULANCE in the right manner.

because an ambulance might be up your *** with its lights flashing and obviously you would be looking in your rear view mirror so it would be spelt correctly then you would be 'oh, an ambulance' then with common sence, give way to it by moving out of its way

because if you are driving and there is an ambulance behind you you have to know that it is an ambulance and you have to see it through the mirror...

if you are in your car, you can easily read the word AMBULANCE on your rear view mirror so you'll always give them a way to go easily
