after looking at that tom's link and seing the benchmarks, I would have to say that the nvidia card is better. Probably because of the ddr3 memory used. The ddr4 on the ati card adds latency and that can drag down it's overall speed.
Personally, I would choose to save some money here and go with ati. However, depending on what mobo you are using, you might choose nvidia in case you want to use sli in the future. The same can be said for the 3870 and crossfire. It all depends on what mobo you are using and which company's dual gpu standard it supports (if any)

I personally would go with Nvidia. ATI was recently purchased by AMD, which doesn't really bode well for them.
I'm a Linux user and Nvidia has AWESOME support for it. It was an easy decision. ATI takes an arm and a leg to get a 3D desktop working (compiz-fusion). Nvidia ALMOST worked right out of the box.
Nvidia is always staying ahead of the pack. If I'm not mistaken they were the first to do SLI configuration (2 graphics card working simultaneously. Crossfire is ATI's rendition. Now, Nvidia has a tri-SLI configuration. That's THREE graphics cards working simultaneously. ATI came out this shortly afterward.
I would pay the extra money for Nvidia. I have a Geforce 8500GT. I'm pretty happy with it.

Good answers, but take this. ati just nvidia have the same dispute as intel vs amd. now amd owns ati but this has nothing to do with that.
nvidia has a better gpu than ati, they are now on the .65nm technolgy were as ati is still using 80nm just like now intel is going to .45 and amd is just getting into.65 . the chips hold more transistors per wafer therefore produceing more power, speed and is able to render more data. ati is about a year behind nvidia in manufacting so the cards they produce today nvidia was producing a like card last year. give or take a month or two..... so its not a name its just the better gpu. because belive it or not the biggest maker of graphic is intel but they are not for gaming at all. so bigger is not always the better. Nvidia has the crown for now.
my rig intel core two duo 6700 corsair memory 4gigs bfg 8800 GT 512, Crysis 45 frams on max. vista ult

Nvidia would be better if you are a gamer. Very few games use the ATI drivers. They will both play games but most games are based on Direct X and Nvidia drivers. I have owned both cards and have been staying with Nvidia cards with a life time warranty. They have never failed yet. In fact I have 5000 series cards that still work but to old for the new games. My ATI cards all burned up.

there is no significant difference in the quality offered by both the companies, but nvidea being more popular it charges a higher price..
if u r really interested in saving money,ATI cards are good...
but if u show off to your friends that u own some thing which is very high-end,then go for nvidea...
but remember that there is no significant difference in quality
