Unfortunately, you cannot judge anyone's character by their looks. Hitching rides was commonplace before 1980 or so. Then bad things happend to raiders and drivers and it has become a pretty hazardous enterprise.
Even advertising for a travel companion can attract people who will do you harm. Should you decide to have someone with you, screen them carefully and with extreme caution and objectivity. Best to take a girl, not a male. this need for Boy-Girl relationships is going way out of limits. Get at least two photo ID, makes copies of them and leave this with a friends.... just in case
In the end, make sure it is only one (1) person and not two. No matter what, you have to consider that you are inviting a total stranger into your car. You have no idea of their true motive in taking the ride with you.
If you do take someone. Make sure you make clear that they must give you a travel expense deposit. you carry no cash and use only Credit cards to pay expenses.
Do not carry more cash than $20.00 to $50.00 on your person, if you have considerable cash hide it in the car and never, under any circumstances go near it until your companion is out of the car. that eliminates robbery as a motive to hurt you.

I don't think there is no sure way to judge them by looks, I have picked up many hitchhikers, I would say there is only like a 1% chance of picking up a killer if thats what you mean. Ihave also hitchiked myself and 99% of the time get a ride. Don't be so paranoid about it, I have met alot of good people that way. I disagree with organbui if they had money they wouldn't be hitchhiking. some of these answers you got are very paranoid people.

Some of the nicest looking people aren't what they appear to be.I wouldn't pick up anybody. If you have enough time place an ad for a companion for the trip and interview people to find someone you feel comfortable with. It still doesn't guarantee that you will be safe but at least you will have more than just their looks to go on. And you would have someone to share the expenses of the trip with.

You need to have your head examined and don't pick anyone up. It's not only dangerous, but your are taking on someones else's problems. Like if they get in the car with you, they might have drugs, a weapon etc... A little old sweet grandmother can turn into a grandma from hell. Besides if you get pulled over and they don't want to have the gun or the drugs on them, they will stash them in your car and say it was not theirs, which leave you holding the bag per say. Not only they can rob you, kill you, take your money etc... they can leave you stranded. I would take some tunes along with you and pull over in a well lite area and keep safe. Good Luck.

i have picked up hitchhikers on my travels, all of them were just regular people that needed a ride. But be careful there are also very sick twisted people out there that may want to harm you. Just make sure that the weapon you carry is better and more accessible than the weapon they may be carrying, or just play it safe and dont pick up anyone. It is your choice and your risk. There really is no way to judge a person on looks alone.

You cannot judge character solely by looks. Ever heard of Ted Bundy? He was good looking and smart and he was one of the most famous serial killers to ever live.
Simple rule: Don't pick up hitchhikers.

Before you go on your venture, I highly recommend you see the movie "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" and review "the rules of the road".
It's a nice educational piece involving Jay and Silent Bob, a nun, and a bum. I've learned a lot.
she brings up a fine point. alcohol trumps axe murders.

it's just as dangerous for a hitchhiker to get a ride with a bad person as it is for a person to pick up a bad hitchhiker.it goes both ways. i would try to find someone i knew to ride with me.that would be much safer.

Depends on where you live. Isn't hitchhiking illegal in the U.S.? (not that this should stop you...)
I think most people are probably nice and trustworthy, but it's that risk of meeting the one person who isn't. Remember Ted Bundy fooled a lot of people.
Edit - I stand corrected, it's not illegal :
