I have tried all the easy checks is there anything I can try please

Sorry if you have already done this, but not sure what "all the easy fixes" are.

Most common problem is that the volume of the mic, which is separate from the volume for the speakers, is turned down or muted. In the Volume Control panel, under Options and then Properties, change to Recording devices. You will be able to check the volume/mute there.

Maybe teaching granny to suck eggs but please ensure that a microphone is installed on the machine in the first place.
Cortana will not display microphone connection if there is no mic connected. Most desktops do not have a mic installed and not all laptops do but by the same token virtually all machines now have speakers either built in or as an add-on . It is a simple process to add a combined headset with built-in speaker and microphone or if video is required a clip-on camera with built-in microphone.

Your microphone has probably got a faulty connection, that does not affect your speakers.

just go to the settings of microphone and then click properties and check the box that refers to microphone

I have a wireless mic. and in order that i can hear the mic i have to turn my speakers all the way up . That is not right ? any suggestions ?

if you're using headphones, then maybe the mic wire isn't properly connected into its socket. try pulling out the pink wire and then fitting it back in...that ought to work
