as soon as they can roll around and grab their feet. once they get control of their body movements they can move the gas out fairly well. they still may need a burp every once and a while after that but it seems by the time they can crawl they do not need it at all.

my 3rd son is 7 months and still does need the occaisional burp.

It does really depend on the baby. Even from the beginning with my son, he was almost impossible to burp. We use bottles that are supposed to reduce gas, anyways (dr. brown's) so, maybe that is why. After 2 months, we couldn't get a burp out of him and he is just fine at 6 months. He lets out a big burp every once and a while on his own. If you stop burping-- and an hour or less after feeding your baby starts crying pick him or her up and pat their back. Sometimes they cry because they need to let a big burp out. That's my son, anyways.

It really varies with the baby -- just like everything else. Most babies need to be burped for the first several months. Then at aobut 4 - 6 months, most babies are able to do it themselves. It's not at that hard to figure out -- just let the baby not be burped by you and see what happens.

It depends on the baby, but when he or she can move around on their own is usually when they are able to get bubbles of gas out themselves. Some are more sensitive to gas, and they will need to burp longer than others. Usually around 6 mos. but can be different for each child.

mine were breastfed and needed very little burping and by the time they were 2-3 mths they would just do it on their own. Usually by the time they can sit up on their own they don't need to be burped anymore because they can get their gas up themselves

I breastfed and it was only the first month or so I needed to do that, and I'm not sure I needed to do it then.
