Respect is something you earn, it is not something you are given unconditionally. No-one gets respect from me unless they have earned it and I cannot think of a single reason why a homophobe would earn my respect.

As a straight person, I find homophobes sad, frustrating, and sometimes hateful. But I know how strong their conditioning may have been to turn them into a homophobe. So I can respect them as people but not for their hate. I can separate the person from the bad learning.

I'm sorry but someone who feels compelled to tell someone else that the way they were born means they are going to hell or are evil or persists in making value judgments about others based on what some preacher told them rather than rational thought is not worthy of any respect from me, just pity. Especially when they go out of their way to try to tear down others in what is supposed to be a "safe" place for those others. That is evil in my book, a textbook example of it. It is the polar opposite of what the teachings of Jesus said so although I am not and never have been christian, I only respect those Christians who actually follow those teachings.

Although I can get angry and impatient with them, I try to remember that they're just people too, and that they probably just don't have enough information. Some really are just angry, aggressive, intolerant people, but some can change with knowledge.

I have some things (and types of people) that I can't stand too, so it helps me to remember that. I think that a happy balance is always possible, and while neither side has to EMBRACE the other, we can all learn to work and live together.

i dont think any gay person should respect a homophobes.. i mean we dont respect you...most of the time if you meet a homophobes and its a guy you could be in danger... i dont think you should waste your time trying to connect to a homophobes.. as one myself i dont like gay guys..the truth is they make me sick... when i see a guy and another guy holding hands or kissing it makes me wanna puke... i have no respect for them..so why should they respect me? homophobes could careless what you think about them..but for some reason you gay guys care what they think of you...actually you care what the whole world thinks of you...i dont want gay guys to die...or be put to death or anything like that... i just wish they wouldn't talk about it..hey you like to put it in another guys butt...do it behind closed doors... why do i have to go to a club and see 2 guys kissing.. its insulting and just plan nasty... no way to accept something that is completely disgusting to someone else
