Hey guys my laptop has been having problems and recently when i turned it on it shows the gateway and then in the bottom right bios setting and boot menu, but then it goes to a black screen with a blicking cursor. I cannot type anything and none of the F keys will take me anywhere. Its just beeps. Now if i hit F2 right as i turn on the computer it takes me to a screen that says PhoenixBIOS Setup Utility, but it wants a password, but i dunno the password. And also if i hit F10 right as the computer is turning on it takes me to a boot emnu where the options are hard disk, CD ROM DVD ROM, boot to LAN, and removable device. none of these work and it just goes back to the black screen with a blinking cursor. I don't have a restore cd, but i'm going to borrow one off a friend, what do you guys think is my problem and do you think the cd will fix the problem, thanks.

See i keep getting mixed answers. Gateway is saying any new recovery cd will work, some people are saying that it has to be that same laptop, some poeple are saying it only has to be that same os, and some are saying as long as its xp it will work....

Sounds terminal to me ... and unless your friends Laptop is exactly the same as yours that won't work either .... sounds like a problem with the hard-drive ... maybe it's just shaken loose ... try removing it and replacing it so it's all freshly reseated ... (fingers crossed for you)

I guess some issue with your boot device in your bios settings. Since You dont remember the BIOS password you wont be able to go to the Bios menu to check.
Best way is go to the repair center and ask him to do a BIOS password reset. once that is done check your boot device settingsand then try booting the machine i guess it should work.

If you can get a restore disk see if you can run a Scan or Check disk utility. It sounds to me like you have a corrupted boot file, a scan or check disk should fix that, unless the hard drive itself has been physically damaged.
