My baby is due at the end of Jan and I want to have a sow a seed so it grows up with the baby. My friend is 30 and has a cactus that was planted on his birth which I think is a nice idea.
I need something that will last for years and years, not grow too big and be suitable for a pot as we intend to move house in several years time.
This is for the uk.
I could go with a cactus but would appreciate any other ideas

Thanks.

A Chrismas Cactus would be beautiful since they spread and are long-lasting..... they come in a variety of nice colours, and white, which is beautiful .... I once saw a large specimen right at Christmas time all covered with beautiful white blossoms; once you find a spot they like, do not move them around, since they like to stay put - they look lovely on a fern stand; propogation by cutting / when you move, pack it carefully into a box so the pot will stay in place so the plant does not knock against the sides of the box

The other is a Jade Plant......they are stocky, grow nicely, and last a long time; propogation by cutting / also protect by stabilizing the pot so its branches will not break when you move to another home ..... not fussy about location

Both of them propogate easily and make great gifts

An aloe vera plant is practically indestructible and can last a lifetime. On top of it all, the juice that you squeeze out from the leaves is excellent treatment for diaper rash. Prepare now with a beneficial, long lasting plant. The juice also treats burns. Snip off a part of the leaf; squeeze the juice on the burn and you will feel great. The plant will not be hurt by using its leaves.

Being a lover of cactus, I would say that woukld be a good one, because they are long lived and can stay in a pot. However, I would sow quite a few extras in case the 'one' seed doesn't make it or come up or something. Good luck.

Cactus is a bit prickly for a small child. How about a nice apple tree. My dad planted one when my brother was born and it lived for years and we ate the fruit from it. We had to leave it when we moved but I think they do pot varieties nowadays so it would be portable.

A red amaryllis, it is a flower that is so pretty and grows from a bulb and has four flowers per stock, it is soooooo beautiful you can buy them at a grocery store, they come in kits the kits range from 5.00$ to 9.99$, in the kit includes a 24-28 cm bulb depending the price, there is also soil, the pot and saucer they are super popular plants.

Clivia - slow growing, long lived.
Christmas cactus - my gram's was 75+ years old (start a cutting instead of from seed.)
Any naturally occurring tree seed (maple, oak, pines...) - create a Bonsai, takes years and years.
as mentioned cacti and succulents.

Beautiful idea. congrats mommy.

Forsythia would be nice as it blooms earliest in the year and flowers before the leaf appears this would commemorate your childs early arrival in the year, it is also a lovely sunny yellow, to match her [hopefully} disposition. all the best for your birthing time.

I think a Jade Plant would be nice. It is a nice, slow growing, houseplant that doesn't require alot of care.

what about instead of a plant ...naming a star after your baby. you get the charts you can frame, and everything.and your star will always be there for infinity. just a thought anyway.
