Kaluza is credited as the first scientist to observe that mathematical representations of physical phenomena work out much more cleanly if you allow four spatial dimensions instead of three. Superstring theory extended this idea by allowing more. There's strong agreement that the minimum number for a meaningful superstring theory is 11. M-brane theory extends that from linear dimensions to branes (something vaguely like membranes).

It's far too early to tell whether any such theory can be formulated to meaningfully represent physical reality. Ask again in a few more years, perhaps decades.

Dimensions are a fairly abstrat concept and in mathematics you can have as many as you need to describe a system.

In terms of physical dimensions, different theories have included 5, 9, 11 and infinite dimensions in their models of the universe, but none have been proven thus far.
