Train spotters exist ....... I used to see them standing at the end of the platform at the station in their grey anoraks, with their notebook and pencil and thermos .......... and I'm not joking on that either!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes Train Spotters exist as do Stamp collectors. I was a train spotter during the age of steam, until my early teens. The anorak, orange not grey, was very warm and waterproof.
My interest changed to riding trains and I am hoping to ride both the Trans Siberian and the new Beijing to Lhasa line.
I also collect stamps and have done all my life. I took over an uncles stamp collection and have specialised in Australian State stamps going back to pre 1st world war.
What good was it all? I Learnt an awful lot of Geography.
The tone of your question suggests lack of respect for both.
Maybe it reflects my view of Pub Crawlers and Binge Drinkers.
It takes all sort to make up a world population.

I have been a train watcher for many years (sure hope that's what you mean by "spotters"). Dad worked for a major railroad for many years and used to joke about my wanting to find engines, etc. by saying we could always follow the train by following the tracks! I've groaned over that one for 20 years or more.
I just try to take pictures, if possible, and sometimes just watch the train go by. Only twice have I seen a live steam engine in operation: once, in 1984, at the Monticello, IL, railway museum where they had a small 0-4-0 shifter/switcher hauling a few passenger excursion coaches, and in 1993 when Union Pacific's 3985 Challenger 4-6-6-4 came through mid-Missouri. Oh, how I wish for a video of those days!
BTW, I've never heard of an "anorak". What are these?

I would suppose I'm a "part-time train-spotter"... I commute on the train each day, and do take pics of "odd" things I see as well as things for research regarding my model railroad.
I DON'T carry a radio-scanner nor loiter around though...
I still have the stamp collection I started back in 1973 - And it's current thru 2005.

train spotters still exist, these days they can often be seen toting video recorders, expensive SLR cameras. Some of them still wear the uniform anorak, many do not.
Coming back from darn sarf I saw odd little groups of people gathering at station platforms bridges etc.... it turned out there was a steam train following behind the train I was on and 'they' had come out to watch the train.

I used to be a fairly keen train spotter as a boy. That was in the steam train days.
They really were something to wonder at.
Not much point in staring at the boring locomotives that we have nowadays.
