The person I'm shopping for has guitar software that helps him (amazes me to watch), takes music theory classes at his high school. So not looking so much for any how-to, as an inspiration biography of a guitarist or musician. He does like to play heavy metal and hard rock when jamming with his buddies too.
hearing what your favorite bios (or other books) might have been, will be most appreciated.

He might appreciate a subscription to a guitar magazine. There are some guitar magazines that have helpful tips and sheet music that guitarists can play. Just go down to your local bookstore and get a copy of a magazine that you think he might be interested in. You can fill out and send in the subscription card, and wrap up the issue that you bought.

P.S. I think that few people would dispute that Segovia is one of the best classical guitarists ever. So you can look for a biography of him, or even a CD of him playing.

Look for some books on Joe Pass, Villa Lobos, John Dowland, Andres Segovia, Django Reinhardt, many more.

If you want to go the other way with uit, find out what strings he likes to use and get him several sets of his most useful strings, believe me, that is a worth while gift for ANY guitarist.
