Yes over spending too, then the anti-climax after the festivities, back to normal, my pet hate as a boy was the visits to relatives, sit still, no speaking until spoken to, now in my adage I live alone, and it is heaven, it is nice to see people enjoying Christmas, that is my pleasure.
Happy Christmas.

I think people get too stressed out about buying everyone the perfect gift and making everything perfect for Christmas and they go to far and end up in dept, which adds financial worries to the stress. In that way, over-indulgence is a part of that Christmas depression some people face.

There are other factors too though. Some people are lonely for Christmas because they don't have anyone to celebrate it with or can't be with the one they'd like to spend Christmas with. Some are depressed because they can't afford to indulge themselves and their family for Christmas like people around them do. Some get depressed seeing all the happy people and united family when they don't have that.

There are many reasons.

No, it's not being able to be with your family at the time of the year because that is the message sent to you in all of the christmas movies that are ever made about this wonderful time of the year. I should know because I lost both of my parents in '92 and there for a little while I was part of a family but even when I had that I would miss my own family very much and remember what I didn't have anymore. I still miss them but I have wonderful friends that celebrate Christmas with me before the holiday and I have learned to make the best of the holiday by myself.

My hubby gets depressed because Christmas in his family has always been more like a bunch of people going through the motions. It is not a celebration.
In my family it is a huge celebration, we all get along and it's always a great time. We all go to midnight mass together. As we all have to travel to get home for Christmas that is our gift to each other, only the kids get present so it's fun buying, not stressful. We have a great big meal with everyone chipping in, ladies cook and clear up, the gents do the dishes.
My hubby gets depressed after seeing his family at Christmas because he wishes they could all get along like mine does. It makes him sad. It makes me sad to see him like this and unfortunately it happens like clockwork.

Depression comes on people at Christmas in various ways
and the best way to deal with this is: Get into the conversations, talk about when you were a kid, and maintain a pleasant atmosphere around yourself.

Often it's down to isolation, lack of direction, feeling hopeless in relationships. These are things people focus on at this time of year, for example, because they are forced into mixing with relatives who they don't see very often and it brings it to the surface. The rest of the year they bury their heads.
