I work at a retail store, and they make me walk up to every customer, greet them, tell them our sales, ask them what they're shopping for, and basically track their activity through the store...giving them more clothes to try on, suggesting more things, etc etc...

ANyway, it DRIVES ME CRAZY and I know that I want to be 100% left alone in a clothing store unless i need help, in which case I'll ask for it.
My question is...do you like to be greeted and all that crap when you walk in the store or do you find it annoying and you would rather be left alone?

Stores go through this all the time. I do not want to even talk to anyone who works in a store unless I ask for assistance. Even this well intentioned policy some stores have of having a person stand at the door and greet everyone in annoying. They don't seem to realize that: A) if you are in a hurry and your mind is racing with things you need to do they are very distracting and B) especially in malls you walk in and out of so many stores that it becomes quite annoying.

There was a store in New York called Barney's. It was a men's store. When you walked in someone would ask you if you needed help. If you did not they gave you a button to wear that said "just looking" and no one else would bother you until you asked for help. That too, was annoying. The best policy for a store is to have enough sales help on hand when people need them. Otherwise, stay out of the way.

Merry Christmas!

I can see your frustration but you really need to remember that you must do what the store has asked you to do. You work for them and they get to make the rules. When you own your own store someday you can make the rules.

It's been proved that the way to sell in shops is exactly the way your management requires. That is why they require it. People like to be greeted and treated like a customer.

Maybe retail is not for you. You might be better off in a factory or warehouse where you don't see people all the time - I'm not joking, I have a good friend who works in a warehouse all day with only 2 other people and she is completely happy there. She does not need to to greet anyone and as you said yourself all that other "crap".

Peace

I was a greeter for a very short time at a major retailer! Most people appreciate that initial greeting but I can't see 'shagging' them throughout the store! More important to the consumer is to have a an assisstant available if they have questions! Personally, I prefer to be left alone!

Most people want to be left alone. But some stores believe you should pressure the customer. You might be more comfortable working some where else. But stick with your job until you get another.

Usually i hate it.. i prefer being on my own.. but some other times when i am on a rush and don't know my way through out the store, i prefer having someone showing me things around the store.

But mainly i hate it when they are very sweet and follow me every place.. i really hate it.

I like helpful friendly assistants but hate being pounced on as soon as i walk through the shop door.
If and when i want their help i will ask!!!!!
Don't even get me started on car dealerships! The salesman is your best ever pal until the deal is done, Then you can go to hell, I know i've bought enough brand new cars!!!

If I was a customer, the best thing a sale person can do is say "If there is anything you need please let me know." and walk away. The owners don't realize it but the customer knows what they want and if they need help they will ask.

I find it terribly annoying. It reminds me of the feeling of going to a car dealership when you just want to look around and all of a sudden they are on you like rabid dogs. If I want to ask questions, I'll ask. Until then...leave me alone.

I worked in a high pressure furniture store that made us do the same thing. Makes you feel like a sleezy used car salesperson.
