40 weeks is standard, and the prime time for the baby to be born. However, the professionals give a 2 week leeway before and after, as sometimes the time of conception isn't exact.

A baby born at 38 weeks, *should* in most cases be fine, but a doctor wouldn't induce at this stage unless absolutely necessary. They tend to induce around 42 weeks if the baby isn't coming out, as the placenta stops working as effectively after this time.

Basically, the baby knows when s/he is developed enough to come out....unfortunately there's not much to do about it, until you get to that 42 week cut off point.

I know how frustrating late pregnancy is, but hang on in there.

It depends on which trimester you are in. On average, in the thrid trimester, baby gains about half a pound a week.

The reason that full term is 38 to 42 weeks, is because there's no real way to know for sure your due date. That's why it's an estimated due date. At 38 weeks, baby have developed everything he needs to survives. The longer you carry him, then more his lungs developed but if he's ready to come, then he'll come.

Full term is 40 weeks, the longer he is in there, the more weight he will gain yes but you were to go into labour now you more then likely would be fine, even with the two week either way.

Just relax and let nature take it's course with putting you into labour.
