I've been going to the same sandwich shop for lunch the last four months and since they are very friendly and obliging I bought a Christmas box of chocs to say thanks. I am now however wondering if this isn't silly? They are just doing their job after all but to me it just isn't a given that people 'just doing their job' are also nice with it so I thought it deserved a little thank you. Is that absolutely not done or would it be ok?

I think it's a great idea. I'm a medical secretary and I got a gift from a patient the other day. It was just a little box of chocolates but WOW...it really made me feel good that they thought of me!

Sincere gift-giving is always a nice, friendly gesture, no matter what time of year or the reason. After all, who doesn't appreciate receiving a gift? However, you don't say exactly why you think giving this gift might be "silly".

If, for example, it's because you feel the gift might be too personal for people you don't know well, I don't think there's any problem.

No that's not silly at all. I give my dry-cleaning guy a box of chocolates every year, the maids who come to clean my house get a little something, and also the guy at the bowling alley as well (since I belong to a league and bowl there once a week). It's a nice gesture.

You can give a gift to whoever you want. I think it is nice of you to show your appreciation for someone doing a good job. Even if you just gave them a christmas card would be nice. I, for one take people like that, for granted and shouldn't. You sound like a great person. I say yes, give to whomever you wish.

No, that's not silly. I think they will be pleasantly surprised. Everyone likes to know they are appreciated, even just for doing their job well. I think it's very nice of you to think of them.
