If it was just me, what I could afford but if you are a large group of people a couple of GBP(sterling if in UK) each would mount up and you could buy a larger present of more value. A gift is always supposed to be the thought that is behind it not the cost of the gift although in the modern consumer world I am not sure this still applies.

Probably set a max of $20. If it is a really good friend that you have known for a while, I'd up it to $50. Gift certificates are always best for me, because I always hate getting something that someone would never use.

About $20. For family, much more. We took my sister on a cruise for her 50th and even included her airfare.

Do you have a "Spencer's Gifts" or a novelty store like that in your area? I would get some of those "Over the Hill" gag gifts, but also something nice... cologne?
