Use a plunger. Most likely your pipe is pretty clogged up too. As a preventive measure, once you unclog the toilet with the plunger, you could use either bleach or toilet flusher fluid (easily purchased at Walmart, etc....) .
Remember to leave the bleach or toilet flusher to sit for awhile before flushing it. Let it sit to break down the build up in the pipes. Good luck.

DO NOT USE A PLUNGER
it will only push the clog deeper into your pipes.
Use / borrow / call a plumber to use a plumber's snake to go down through the toilet, into the drain pipe to dig-out the clog.

I have had similar problems. I used a wire hanger to get it out. Just put a hook at the end of the hanger. You can also get tools especially made for this at hardware stores. However, the hanger worked great for me.
