Allot of times the player tries to get it back . They may trade a game worn jersey or bat and such to get it back.

If the player wants the ball they will usually offer the fan something for the ball. It could be another ball with an autograph, a bat, or some other item the fan might like. However, once in the possession of the fan the ball is his and he does not have to give it up.

By the time a player makes it to the Major Leagues they have hit quite a few home runs and aren't very likely to get that particular baseball away from a fan without offering something in exchange such as an autograph or tickets to another game.
I have never caught a home run ball, but I have had players autograph foul balls and I have had players blow me off like a cheap date. It depends on the player and how he views fans.

They usually give the fan who caught the ball, a replacement ball and/or some bats and even an autograph. The first homerun ball usually isn't worth as much as a milestone ball like numbers 500, 661,716, and someday A Rod's 763.

Like Joe D said, the first home run ball isn't worth very much unlike other milestone home runs, but you do have to get your first homerun, before you get your 2nd or even more, even 500, and maybe not every ballplayer will get 500 or even more homeruns. You have to hope to that wind will be on your side to get a home run. But i can't think of any baseball players that have gone thier whole carrer without getting one single home run, and if there is one, that would be pretty bad. That is in less they have only played one game.

usually the team will try to get the ball back for the player. usually they will trade the person who caught the ball an autographed baseball or maybe a pair of tickets to an up coming game for the actual home run ball since it would be setimental for the player.
you would think 1st home run balls would be valuable but since the balls are not market before the pitch is thrown like they are for milestone HR's there is little way to prove you got pujlos's 1st HR ball for example so it is hard to prove authenticity

I think only if the player wants something back they would offer something. Me and my buddy were at the game in Chicago when Justin Morneau hit his first major league homerun. The ball is sitting in my buddies office as I type this.

The team will try to get it back from them so the player can have it. Security comes and gets them and i dunno what they offer them but it must be something good. I was at the phillies game last year when carlos ruiz hit his first home run and i was actually only a few seats away from the ball and I saw the security guys come and get him.

it does have some meaning so the player so they might try to get it back- but they do give something nice back in return
i think the majority of players would let the person keep it- i think that would be the better thing to do

They can't take it away from you. If you catch it it's your to keep if you want. Often times if the player wants it back they might pay you or try and trade you something else for it.
