Do you make it short and sweet or does it read like a book?

Mine usually reads like a book! lol

I can write a twelve page essay on how to lick a stamp...lol...but I try to keep my emails a reasonable length without reaching boredom (I hope).

Emails, I believe, should mimic the "Three B's" rule of public speaking:
Be brief
Be brilliant
Be seated

Kinda in between. I answer their question (if they have one) and ask them a question. Or just talk about the reason we talk to eachother. Most probably because of the band we're both fond of. For example: Muse, Tokio Hotel most of the time.

The conversation isn't a book. But isn't a sentence. It's...a paragraph. Lol

With a mere 1500 character limit they're often two mailings long.
I discuss a lot of things with friends and others here.
The Least fortunate of them are in my IM list... lol!
