how you feel then if you are depressed they brush you off? Very recently I got so depressed it was scary to even me and everyone around me seemed to do everything but want to notice. If someone thought I was feeling better and asked and I replied honestly then they quickly moved on to something else like my true feelings didnt matter. I wasnt trying to bring people down or complain but some real crap was going on and I thought I dont have a lot of people in my life right now and I thought I could talk to my close family.
Why ask how someone is if you dont really care?

because they feel it's being polite to ask, even if they dont genuinely care.

Some people truly care how you feel. And when they ask, they are so hoping to hear that you are okay.

When they hear the contrary, they do not know how to react, how to deal with it, and feel helpless. One reaction to this, is to run away and avoid the situation. They then behave as if nothing took place. It's their own protective mechanism.

I'm sorry you're experiencing this. You really need someone to talk to when depressed.

Seek other people for help. Sometimes, an objective observer such as a religious person, therapist, doctor, can be more understanding and helpful than your immediate family and friends.

Most of our social courtesies have become innuendos, rituals and fakes. That aside,it's time you realize that how important it is to have a core circle of people(may be within or outside of a family) on whom one can depend upon for a support in hard times. The vital thing is to keep nourishing such a core group without any immediate expectations. No matter how fast or slow our life styles are,we all need an anchor to hold on to during rough weather and storms.

Some people don't care; most just can't deal with it, or don't know how. People aren't taught how to deal with the darker side of life. I've just learned to fake being happy in front of people. I know it isn't healthy, but at least I don't feel bad about bringing anyone else down.

Get some real help.

people ask just to keep up appearances. to pretend they care about you when in reality, they just don't. They only want other people to think they are caring when they're not. If they really cared, they would ask you in private or call you on the phone and not brush you off that easily.
