The plot's very complicated but it's what is referred to as a neo-noir (which means new noir). What's noir? That's a type of film that appeared in the 1940's and 1950's that emphasized the dark side of city life. It was shot in black and white with skewed angles, scenes mostly lit for night, and a lot of interior shots. Usually it would involve detectives who were just as disturbed as the men they were tracking down and it involved themes of doom.

The plot's really complicated, it involves a lot of characters: a Ed Exley, Kevin Spacey, Russell Crowe, and James Cromwell are members of the L.A. police department, Danny De Vitto stars as a gossup columnist and Kim Bassinger stars as an LA Prostitute. The film involves weeding out corruption in the police department.

LA Confidential earned an Oscar nomination and might have won the palm d'Or at Cannes, I'm not sure, and probably picked up several critical awards. I know that to this day, some film critics today feel that if they had to vote for the 1997 Oscars again, they might have chosen LA Confidential instead of the more commercially-oriented Titanic.

More than anything else, it involves quite a bit of violence.

L.A. Confidential is an excellent film made in 1997. It stars Russel Crowe, Kim Bassinger, Kevin Spacey, Guy Pierce and Danny Devito among others. Directed by Curtis Hanson. It is based on a crime novel of the same name. It is set in 1950s L.A. and explores the corruption of the L.A. police department through the lives of several police officers all taking different paths but ending up in the same place. There are excellent performances from Crowe, Pierce and Bassinger for which she won an Oscar. The film was nominated for 9 Oscars winning two. The screen play won in addition to Bassinger. Sex, money and murder are intergral parts of the film so there is foul language, some sexual situtions and graphic images of violence. However i would not deem it gratuitous by any means. It is all essential to the plot. I highly recommend this film.
