Because it doesn't to me.
My friend got 2 weeks of detention because the top button of his shirt was undone and his tie was too loose.
For the record, his tie wasn't even that loose and *no one* buttons their shirt up all the way.
I can't believe he got 2 weeks just for that. It's not like the teacher had repeatedly warned him about it or anything. She just mentioned it today. We were in (history) class and she came to "inspect" it. My friend (Drake) was kind of sitting there, not really listening to what the teacher was droning on about, when that lady (who also happens to be our roll call teacher) came in and said,
"Drake ! Do your parents pay $20,000 a year for you to daydream ? No ! And button that shirt up ! And tighten that tie ! I WON'T have you disrespecting the school uniform. In fact, two weeks of detention - In my office."
Isn't that a little *harsh* ?
Shouldn't he have just gotten a warning or something ?

Actually it isn't a school night. It's a Friday night and it's only 5:26 PM where I am.

I get the feeling that it's because she just hates all males. She always tries to punish the boys for stupid reasons, but for some reason, she REALLY hates my friend Drake.

This isn't the only thing she's punished him for, by the way. She once gave him detention when she came to inspect our English class because his arm was only half-raised when the teacher called the roll.

He should have retorted, "My parents don't pay $20,000 a year for you to be a cow."

That does sound very harsh to me. He should have been allowed to button the shirt and tighten the tie. Now, if he would have disobeyed, then maybe ONE DAY of detention would have been sufficient, but that is VERY harsh for something that is really insignificant.
If I was his mom, I'd be up at the school having a talk with the principal, especially if I was paying 20 grand for him to attend that school!

That does sound unfair. Sorry about your friend. This stuff happens in public school all the time. Some teachers take it personal and some don't really care.
At my former high school, the high authority (Principal, Assistant Principals, etc.) would get pissed if our shirts weren't tucked in. It was ridiculous. They would assign ISS (In School Suspension) for at least 2 days for it. Yet, teachers didn't enforce it. They thought it was stupid.
Yes, he should have just got a warning for it. That sucks so bad.

I don't think the issue is if the punishment was harsh or fair. If I read this right, you've got school uniforms, and as such, I can assume that there is a published dress code. Rules are rules and if you've got a uniform, you had better be wearing it properly. Just imagine any other public official, (police, government etc.) wearing their clothes like your friend. I hope this makes my point.

I use to work for the school district...They will take the teacher's side on everything...i know...but I do know the teacher SHOULD HAVE WARNED HIM.......AND HE SHOULD HAVE SAID THAT WHEN HE WENT TO THE VICE PRINCIPAL's office....(that he received NO WARNING.....(that is where student had to go that got into trouble for some minor thing)....I am truly sorry that happened to him, i really am...It does sound like she is USING HER POWER TO do whatever...it is all about POWER!!!

Ehh she either really hates him or is majorly PMSing.
I was going to give you the whole 'tell him to tell his parents or the principal or someone else at school' but I never do that when our health teacher starts spazzing, but if that works for you, go ahead and tell your parents or his parents, if you know them well enough.
The question was 'does it sound fair to you?' and it sure as hell doesn't sound fair to me. The teacher probably thinks he's a slacker and is likely to go harder on him.

He should have gotten a warning. Or if it is in the policy book they hand out at the beginning maybe lunch or one day but definately not two weeks. One day was strectching it a lot.

Sounds like the school is more focused on the "look" of intelligence.. That much money I'd involve my parents. If they want to be more focused on punishment, then maybe they should change careers....

thats way unfair
so what if your tie isnt tight? does she want a classroom of choked to death students?????
NO ONE does their shirt up like that. Maybe adults do, but its just sad if a teenager does it. She must be pretty damn strict.
I feel sorry for u guys.
