As a musician I feel that music exists as a way to release energy, whether it is positive or negative, in a constructive way. If I am really upset I can just pick up my guitar, crank the amp up, and just let it out. When you're playing on stage, or for some friends while you have some beers you are exchanging energy, bouncing vibes back and fourth in a game of catch. The raw energy created at concerts, shows, and in the heat of the moment gives the body a natural high.
Do we as a society need music? No, I don't think we need it, but we want it. People use music to define their lives - not completely, but small aspects of their personality and their opinions. For example I've told my friends many times that there should be a radio station that, 24/7, plays "Low Rider" by War; just so when you're out there in your car you've got a guaranteed road trip, even to the store.
And to answer why everyone listens to music: "One good thing about music, is when it hits you you feel no pain."

I like music because it's my escape. I can feel the beat and I loose myself in it so I forget about the past and the future and just live in the music moment. Writing music is also a way to express our selves and get our point across. I don't know if we need it. But now that we have it. it's going to be hard to get rid of. Dancing to music is also another kind of expression. I also love to dance. Music helps me concentrate, only if it doesn't give me a headache. Hope this helps.
Good Luck &
Blessed Be

music is a way of communication that has been around for so long it is a part of us. people used to use song so that stories could be passed down easier and with some entertainment tossed in. when most people listen to music they feel a pull to that emotion that the singer is singing about. music unites us in a way that just words never can because it makes the words string along and keep our attention better.

There are theories that music originates from the sounds of nature. These sounds represent our connection with the natural world. As Man has evolved, and our thoughts became more complex, music became ingrained in our mental process as a means of expression that is similar to art, or literature. The means to communicate emotion through non-verbal medium. Music may very well be the most ancient of these forms.

Music has been part of society since the dawn of man. Music tells a story, be it full of sorrow, or cheer the story is told. There is no other way that I have found that can affect your mood like music by lifting you up, or causing you to crash down.

In addition to "soothing the savage beast" music is another way to express and convey the acceptance and struggles of the human condition.

ummm...."need"?!?! I dont think so...but "want"... by all means, YES!!
People identify themselves with a lot of the music they listen especially the those that they "enjoy". IOW, a lot of folks think that the music was written about them. It similar to why do we enjoy literature or paintings ...etc.,etc.

wow you question why we "need" it. well i suppose there are some who could get along without it. but not me, i wake up everyday with a song in my head, either one i've heard recently, or one that fits with my dreams, or one i composed during my sleep. i cant deny myself music, one of life's greatest pleasures. the question you are asking is this: is pleasure a necessity?
well as much as well need orgasms, we need music!
