The Muslims, just like their fellow Filipinos, are free to go anywhere in the Philippines. They are not confined in Mindanao although majority of them have made their homes there. And yes, they have bustling business presence in Manila.

Think of it this way, If you're familiar with Ireland, the Philippines is basically the same as that country a couple of decades ago, or to be more exact, the island of Mindanao is the same as Ireland. The Muslim extremist groups are based way down south where the fighting is hardest, the North is generally peaceful, kinda like the way most of the IRA extremists were based in Northern Ireland leaving the south in peace. And where Ireland have Protestants and Catholics, the Philippines have Christians and Muslims. The Christian and Muslim community generally get along with one another in the country and most of the war fought today are between the extremists who want autonomy or a separate state and the government troops protecting government territories, and the civilians are merely caught in the crossfire. I have yet to hear of a fight between the extremists groups and fully armed organized Christian civilian groups like those Waray and ilaga vigilante groups during the Marcos Martial Law era or the UDF in Ireland. Most of the time, the media tends to blow things way out of proportion and make events appear more dangerous than they actually are to boost ratings and what's worse, in the past, they spouted labels like Muslim and terrorist in the same breathe, making it appear a religion and not just a small group of misfits is a terrorist organization. At the moment, the chances of a right wing "Christian" military group taking over another 5 star hotel is higher than the chances of a Muslim extremist group doing the same thing. But then again, it's Christmas, and all those crowds inside shopping malls do present a vey tempting target for some outcasts with an axe to grind against the government. But notice, it's usually a very small group of kooks which are not representative of the whole Muslim community, who perpetrated these atrocities in the past, and whether some of them were even genuine muslims or just bandits pretending and riding on the terror bandwagon, is a big question. But then again, you never hear or read headlines detailing a "Christian" extremist group lead by a senator taking over a hotel, no no, they're just called mutineers or coup plotters but never Christian : P

There are many Muslims in Manila, right at the center of the City, that is in Quiapo. They are into trading business. They even have a mosque and a community in the area. They live quietly in the area.
Maybe you are talking about the Muslime extremists in the south of Manila. They are fighting for the land which they believe is theirs.
The Philippines is not keeping the Muslims in the south

muslims are basically everywhere now, from the tip of luzon to the tip of edge of mindanaoin the philippines, and not all muslims hails from mindanao, many former christians or other religion are converting to islam after they have studied and understand what islam really means, no one forced them, paid them, threaten them to become muslims, they come on their own, like me, i have converted to islam since 1978, long before islam is connected or ACCUSED to acts of terrorism.
matter of fact, many prominent americans have converted from their former religion or no faith to islam, like the jacksons family, shaquel o'nneal, and many more. Among lthe british, there are lots too, as cat stevens, etc. However, as you might be an american, not only muslims would threaten you, there are lots of anti government anywhere in the world who may hate you to the extremes, but if you're just a low profile personality, fear not, you can go anywhere and nobody would give a glimpse.

It's very strange how come we attach religion to people only if they're Muslims because I never hear anyone any where called by his or her religion!!!crimes are committed every day by some people who happened to belong to religions other than Islam but they're mentioned by their names or nationalities but never by their faith !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
