On Leafs TV today, during the first intermission, they had a peter puck segment about icing and offside

(of course, the offside bit was a little inaccurate)

they are apparantly bringing him back, new and improved.

i never got to see Mr. Puck except for today, and it was pretty cool.

what do you think about him coming back?

Lubers as far as i know it is being produced by it's creator, i cant remember his name, but he lives in tampa.

He was talking about how he is getting calls from people who want to be the new voice of Peter.

I loved Peter Puck. When I was a kid, we made a point to play street hockey in front of my house when the games were on NBC because we knew my dad would be watching and call us in for the intermission. I hope those make their way to YouTube or even better, Versus or NBC. Any idea whether it is still being produced by Hanna Barbara?

Bill: Early to mid 70's. He first appeared in one of the two years the Flyers won the cup, not sure which one though. That may be a good omen for Flyers fans actually. If you remember him in 73-74, that was the year he premiered.

Laying Low: MacFarlane was the guys name, I was drawing a blank. Hanna-Barbara did the animation. MacFarlane authored the comic books as well. I hit Ebay, there are a few Peter Puck collectables available there including a DVD with all of the original cartoons.

Chris, the offside information in that segment was accurate at the time.

Brian McFarlane is one of hockey's best known and authoritative historians. He worked for Hockey Night in Canada from the mid 60s through the early 90s, and did double duty in the 70s working with the weekly NBC game.

He's lived in Tampa for several years and is a season ticket holder for the Panthers, Lightning, and Maple Leafs.

I used to really like Peter Puck on NBC's Hockey Game of the Week,( at least in the US), almost as much as Showdown in the NHL. Segments were funny, and informative. While I didn't see the new version yet, hope it helps pull younger fans in again.

Edit- he was created by Brian McFarlane, an NHL broadcaster in the 1970's. The animation was produced by Hanna- Barbera Studios, which was THE big name in cartoons at the time.

I remember seeing him on NBC way back in the late 60's or early 70's, I'm not exactly sure. All I know is that I saw him long before I knew we had a team in Philly. I first became aware of the Flyers after Game 5 of the 1973-74 Stanley Cup Finals.

I htink I've seen a showing of it once. (not sure if it was in MLG the year it was closing, or if they jsut showed it on whatever team telecast I was watching.

I read in THN that the classic ones are available on dvd... & yes THEY ARE bringing Peter puck back.

I htikn its great, for those that us hockey fans bring to a game that may have never watched a game (or sporting event) in their life.. at least they can learn at the game.

(plus it always helps to have a program for the calls & basics)

they think they need to explain hockey to new generations, though they never explained football.
