OK so at my apartment complex their is one car alarm that goes off literally at least once a night, sometimes even more. Also there are a couple of people that live below me who have parties often, really it wouldn't be that bad but many nights (like tonight) when (I'm assuming this part) their friends leave or arrive they just sit in the parking lot and lay on the horn for like 15 minutes! It wouldn't be that bad during the day, but it is seriously screwing up my sleep. I don't know how much more I can take!

Anyway I was wondering if anyone could give me some suggestion on things to do to help? Either ideas on how to keep sounds from coming in my apartment so much or something like that? I think it'd help if my walls weren't so thin, but I can't just remodel the place lol. Also I was wondering if this is something I'd have the right to complain about, or if there's nothing the apartment people can do.

ps: there's the damn car alarm for the SECOND TIME TONIGHT!!! Grr.

Depending on the quality of your neighborhood, your options may vary.

First and foremost, I would meticulously document every relevant disturbance for about a month or two. Video tape helps immensely but just detailing all the occurrences in a journal will be sufficient. Dates, times, and other relevant FACTS; do not editorialize your documentation. For example, I would not write down… “I hate these people for disturbing my sleep.” Instead I would write “It is 2 am on such and such a date and I was woken once more by a car alarm. I looked out the window and it appears to be the same car alarm that went off on (date/s), license plate number….” Document the facts and leave out your emotions.

Option ONE: Present your documentation (photocopies of course) to your landlord. REMEMBER, sugar attracts more flies than vinegar… be kind and reasonable. If your apartments are managed by slum lords and your reasonable pleas fall on deaf ears, you may be forced to break your lease and move elsewhere. HERE, the documentation will be PARAMOUNT if management decides to sue you for breach of contract.

Option TWO: If you are being disturbed, chances are others are being disturbed. Talk with your neighbors and find out their opinions about the situation. There is power in numbers. You could start a petition concerning the frequent disturbances and present this to your landlord. If this fails, refer to Option ONE.

Option THREE: Be content with a lesser quality of life and invest in an ear plug company because you will need to purchase many pairs. I would suggest the ones used by jet engines mechanics. Sorry, I don’t have the website.

Hope this helps.

Call the landlord. most states require some obsucre caviot about peacful enjoyment of your living quarters... or something like that. As for the car alarm... figure out which car it is, and whenever it's a good time for you, kick the bumper, then listen to music for half an hour... when the alarm stops, kick it again. Eventually, after being late for work a few days and having to "bum a jump" the guy will turn down the sensitivity on his honda CRX so it functions as a car alarm vice a sense of pride.

Call your landlord. I don't remember specifically, but there is a law that says you're supposed to be allowed "quiet enjoyment" or something like that.
