I will be graduating with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice in August of 2008. I want to become a firefighter but am recently burnt out. I want to move to Oahu for one year and live my dream. I have wanted to move to Hawaii since I was at least 17 (now 22). I am this close to buying my one way ticket for September. Only thing is I am worried about my parents, they want me to get my paramedics license, and get everything now. They are sort of strict. I have quite a bit of money in the bank and will be using that. I feel if I tell them what I am doing they will say no and not let me go. I think if I buy the ticket now, wait until May when I graduate and tell them, it would be too late for them to stop me. I want to have a roomate before I move to tell them I found a place. I am just worried about my parents stopping me from doing this and not letting me use my bank money. Plus I will be 23 when I leave and just turn 24 when I get back. What should I do?

Ok so you are 22 years old, but I still think this should be in the 8th grader section. If you are seriously 22 years old and your parents are stopping you from doing something you have always wanted to do I feel bad for you during college. Go and do what you gotta do and live your dream man, you only live once. Jeeze..

You are a college graduate and an adult. Your parents cannot stop you from doing anything. If you let them have that kind of control over you forever, you will resent them later. You are 24 years old for goodness sakes. Weigh your options and make a decision.

Well, you're legally of age, they can't actually stop you. But living in Hawaii is expensive. Make sure you have a place to live and a job lined up before just going, or you won't last for long - and your parents would have been right.

You are an adult. If the money is yours, you can use it and they can't stop you. However, make sure you don't spend everything, because it is possible that if you need help in the future, they may not be willing to do that.
