Yes, some people do (although not large numbers yet)... in fact, my friend and neighbor is in the process of having some put in her backyard. It will probably become more popular in the future as the products improve and water resources become more of an issue.
There are actually a number of speciality brands of artificial lawn that are made specifically for homes (as opposed to sporting arenas) and are even designed to handle pet droppings and the impact of the Arizona sun. If you go into Lowes or Home Depot in the Phoenix area, you will displays for it. Some of it actually looks and feels pretty realistic - you probably would not know if you just walked by. See links below to web pages.
For a lot of people, artificial lawns sound cheesy and they certainly have not become a rage here yet. But there are a lot of advantages... you don't have to spend hours mowing and taking care of it and - perhaps more importantly for Arizona - it does not use any water and with a 7 year drought in the southwest, water resources are starting to become a big concern for the future.
I've thought about putting some in myself (I hate yard work) - but I think I will wait and see how it goes with my neighbor :)

I wonder is some of these people actually live in Arizona. A lot of people have grass here. In the summer, we use mostly bermuda grass. It is thick and bristly, but once it's there, you can't kill it. It goes dormant in the winter months, but comes back alive with no effort in the summer. I live with a brown lawn in the winter, but some people plant Rye to have a green lawn year round.
I think Phoenix has more golf courses per square mile than anywhere in the world so it must not be too hard to grass to grow right?

The sad thing is that there are some homes that do have fake lawns. But these are usually only in small areas in the back of the house. They are needed because the rest of the lawn is rock. So they need a place for their pets to do their business. I personally hate the fake stuff.

No, It's real grass.
Well, it's different grass than you would get in other parts of the country.
It's grass mixed with weeds. It's definitely not soft and lush

We have "Desert Landscaping" which basically means rocks.
