I really want to go to the University of New Mexico (UNM) but I am afraid I won't get in because I read on their website that to get in you need to have a 2.25 GPA in all your high school courses, I am a good student but I kind of had a bad spot in my life during my sophmore year and so I did not earn the 2.25 GPA in four of my classes but have the 2.25 GPA + in all my other classes, so do you think they will reject my application because of this? Do you have any advice on what I should do next?

Hello!

I actually go to UNM so maybe I can help. I don't know if you live in NM now or not or if you are already finished with highschool. Honestly, just make sure the cumulative gpa is 2.25. The school tends to look at specific courses only to award college credit and to get a good look at your scholastic history. For example an A in home ec. is not as good as a B in calculus. I think you should go for it. You will probably get in. The only thing is that it may be harder to get the NM Bridge Scholarship (pays for one semester and if you get a 2.5 you get the Lottery Scholarship for 8 semsters). What a lot of students do who are worried about it is go to CNM (its really close to UNM) and take classes that are cheaper. They work with UNM to transfer and a lot of students do that to make sure they can get their grades up. Good luck! If you need to know anything else let me know!

What they usually mean is that you need that GPA in your cumulative GPA, covering all of high school. In other words, if you had higher grades in some semesters and lower in others, but the average was a 2.25, you would be eligible (frightening thought!). By ALL they mean that your freshman and senior grades will count.

You should look for other colleges. You cannot rely on one college and hope you get accepted especially if you suspect that you will not get in. Also find a job to fall back on as an absolute emergency.
