The GRE is the Graduate Record Exam. It is the exam for admission to most graduate programs in the United States, other than professional schools (business, law, medicine), which have their own exams. ETS, the organization which administers it, says:

The Graduate Record Examinations® (GRE®) General Test measures verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and critical thinking and analytical writing skills. The GRE® Subject Tests gauge undergraduate achievement in 8 specific fields of study.

The GRE is similar to the SAT (which you probably didn't take either). You can find out more about it here http://www.collegeboard.com and where you can take it. It's expensive, but pretty much mandatory if you want to study in the US. They have math, English, and writing sections - it's all done on the computer (but you can't do it from home) and it adapts to your answers - get one wrong and it gives you an easier one, get one right and it gives you a harder one - so it narrows in on your score instead of just assigning one based on number of right answers.
