He'll be working in my house while I'm at work, so he'll get a key to my house. The house I live in with my kids! I know people do it all the time, but I've heard so many horror stories about handymen. I just don't know what I should look for or ask about to screen the one I decide to hire. What do you look for??

Thanks for your help!

Get a personal reference from someone that you know and trust.

Do a background check: Is he licensed, bonded, insured? Does he have a criminal record? Is he stable? Has he lived at the same place for a long time, or has he moved round a lot?

Don't entrust someone with your home, belongings and children if you don't know them.

I recommend to hire someone that has done work for a close friend. (And be sure that this person is not on drugs).
If you are unsure of any handyman or work man entering your home please do not hand over your keys.
Have all work done while you are at home with a friend staying over with you.
You can find reliable handymen working for condo associations. These handymen generally will do work on days off.

the best way to find a handyman is through word of mouth. find someone your friends or family used and really likes. do not go with the cheapest person you find, unless he comes with good recommendations. you need to pay for quality work. if the price is too good to be true it usually is.

general rule of thumb is that good handymen and contractors don't advertise, they get more than enough work through referals. i'm a carpenter and i prefer working for contractors who have deep roots in their community; you never come to the end of the week or the job and not get paid for it.

Ask him for references and check them out. Even with good references, it is a mistake to leave him in your house alone with your kids. He can come on your days off instead.

Only those that come with personal references that you are acquainted with. And never pay in full before the job is completed!
