It depends on the era. When I was born almost 50 years ago, the most common girl's names were Mary, Susan, Debbie, and Karen. The most common boy's names were John, William, Mark, and Michael. I didn't know any girls named Jessica, Ashley, Katelyn, or Hannah nor did I know any boys named Cody, Austin, Dylan, or Zachary. Both my daughters know at least several examples of classmates with all those names. My older daughter at one point had four girls named Jessica in her classroom.
