My brother and I are sharing a computer. There are times that the system runs okay but most of the times its slow thus my brother always ended up in shutting it down "improperly" and I know that's not good for the computer, but he always denies it! I just want to know if there's a way to check whether the computer has been properly shutdown or not? Thank you.

BLAME is now how you share. Just take some time to run some basic maintenance.

- run Disk Cleanup - from the System Tools section of Accessories
- Open My Computer, then Right Click on your C drive and pick PROPERTIES. Pick the Tools section and click on CHECK NOW. Check both tests, and YES, let it run after you restart. You see, CHECK DISK will ensure that your hard drive is working completely. This test might take an hour or so.
- run DEFRAG - from the System Tools section of Accessories.

Keep your anti-virus solution up to date, and run a full scan weekly.

Keep your anti-spyware solution up to date, and run a full scan every few days. I recommend the free SpyBot Search & Destroy that you can get from http://www.download.com

Do all of this regularly, and your computer will run better.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

A proper shutdown is when you shut down the computer through the operating system. In Windows, it's Start -> Turn Off Computer -> Turn Off. A proper shutdown will put away all files, save all settings, and finally, terminate the connections to the hardware.

An improper shutdown is when you shut it off with the power button only. It's improper because you can lose unsaved data (as well as causing other problems) that way. You should only shut down it down that way when it's absolutely necessary.

So yeah, you're definitely right. Tell your brother to avoid doing that, if he can. :)

At startup there should be a screen that comes up saying (naturally) "Your computer has not been shut down properly...system is checking disks" I try to avoid using the power button but really and truly...I think it just wears out your motherboard so DO NOT shut it down by unplugging it or using the power/restart button...Microsoft made ONE way to shut it down...why use any other method...because if Microsoft wanted you to try another method...they would have told people...!!!

the right way is goin to start, shut down and let is do it;s thing, improperly is just holding the power button in until it goes off, and if u do that, the computer will run a check on start up to check for damage, so let it do that.
