A long time ago when our forefathers created the idea of democracy and freedom they wanted to give all people an equal chance at the pursuit of happiness. Now that we are in such a modern world, it just isn't happening. There are many people who no longer believe in the American dream -- and they are Americans! At issue in New Orleans is Hope. Now at Christmas time it would be a good time for the city fathers of New Orleans to try to inspire all New Orleans folks with hope, but instead they have brought up an issue which instills fear in people who live in HUD homes or used to before the calamity there. They are talking of tearing these down, and people fear its just the start of things and will mean there will be less and less a place for them and their children. It is terrible that the city fathers let a lack of communication get this far. They need to let these people speak for even though they might not represent the majority, neither did some of the great founding fathers of this country. Everyone should still be important in America and should still consider their opinion matters.

What you saw was violent desperation from people who called their hardships on themselves and it's been clearly proven they have NO one to blame but themselves.
Population totals in ALL those housing projects were QUADRUPLED because there were three, six and up to eight families sharing apartments built to handle five people!!
For decades, NOLA housing project tennants were eeking out a commune-type lifestyle: using each other's children to scam Welfare benefits, "pooling" Welfare check money while moonlighting by selling illegal drugs and using that ill earned $$$ excessively, attracting murderous violence and welcoming impoverishment and squalor.
Nagin's surprise federally funded investigation into such abuses BEFORE KATRINA, and plans with the Governor's office were drawn up for destruction of the projects, replaced with the "mixed income" housing units--all part of adopting the NEW Welfare / HUD reform program.
When Kat blew in--that sealed the decision to tear down the projects.....and thousands of illegally placed "tennants" made the bad decision to stay in Louisiana.
The NEW Welfare program calls for the building of mixed income housing units that won't allow people to take in multiple families--if caught, they face permanent eviction and revocation of Welfare benefits. Any tennant arrested and found guilty of criminal felonies will also face stinging evictions and banishment of Welfare benefits.
Tennant applicants who have records of criminal felony histories or welfare abuse violations will NOT qualify.
NAACP leader Denatus King can't decry "racism", because the matter is being handled by black NOLA city leaders.
Is there any wonder why such opposition is strong here?

New Orleans has always been a City of people that take, take, take and never give. They poor mouth you to death and then ask for your pocket book. Even the so-called mayor won't live in the crime infested, filthy, City someone long ago built 15 feet under sea level. They need to stop their pity mouthing and get off their asses and get jobs and a life without the handouts.

The number of people who wanted in far exceed the maximum occupency (sp?). After the room was filled, they had to refuse entrance to everyone else. When the protesters forced the issue, the cops were called in.

They were protesting a plan to destroy a damaged, low-income housing neighborhood and replace it with mixed-income housing. I agree with your take that the police seemed to overreact. This is a slightly difficult problem, the low-income neighborhood residents want to maintain the integrity of the neighborhood, but the government believes (and urban planners back them up) that mixed income housing is actually better. Low income housing will still be supplied, but it will be mixed in with other types of housing. It's a complicated issues that highlights when the best in social science studies and statistics meets head on with determined residents who don't want to go in that direction.

XYZ, this is exactly why government shouldn't be providing goods and services. Once you begin, people never want you to stop. Also, the users of suc services come to depend on them rather than themselves. The government that gives you all you need can just as quickly take it away.
Think about that when it comes to healthcare.
