The government take a tax right, which is mandatory. For argument sake lets say this tax gets deducted from your pay each week. Wouldn't you say the government owns your money (since you have no say whether they take it or not) and they are just letting you keep some of it?

You own your money - if you wanted to, you could set your deductions so high that little or no money would come out of your paycheck - you would just owe the government more during tax time (and there are some penalties associated with having to write a big check at tax time).

However, you can also earn untaxable money - interest from municipal bonds, et al - which the government takes nothing. Same thing as income from a Roth IRA.

So it is a matter of perspective and personal tax situation which determines what the government takes at paycheck time and at tax time.

Not really, though it may appear to be so.Tax deductions are with your consent (Law provides for it) and the taxes collected by the Government are off set by providing you,me and every body with services like roads, water, security, law and order and what not. So,as an on going process,we pay taxes for which we receive services. Both are quits and we and the government don't owe each other any thing as outstanding.

Actually you do own it, and you can stop some of it by claiming more dependants on your w-4. Just don't try claiming extras on your 1040.
